So, you’ve invested in a laser printer? And a Brother Colour Toner Cartridges no less? Everything’s been going great, you haven’t had to turn it off and on again once, and you’re the king of the office. But after printing hundreds of premium quality pages, the colour is starting to fade, your Brother’s running low on ink. Here comes the dreaded task of finding the right toner for the right price. You could outsource the task to Sandra; she’d probably get the job done with only a small amount of grumbling, but this printer was your idea. You’re going to have to bite the bullet and go toner shopping. You could do it in-store. Some genuine human advice would be nice, but if that greedy-eyed salesman who works on 100% commission spots your lack of expertise, then the company expenses will take a hit. The other option is to look online. Cue a steady stream of “professional” companies with legitimate-looking websites selling “Genuine Cheap Brother Laser Printer Toner.” Prices that are too low. Therein lies my first piece of advice: If it’s too good to be true, then it probably is.

Brother Colour Toner Cartridges

Lucky for you, you’ve stumbled onto one of the few helpful articles that won’t just tell you which cartridges you should buy. We’re also going to tell you why. There are lots of options when it comes to replacing your printer’s toner. There are the obvious genuine Brother toner cartridges from legitimate Brother Toner Suppliers.

The slightly cheaper but risky if you don’t know what you’re looking at compatible, generic or refurbished toner cartridges. And there’s the extremely risky, you’re asking for trouble, seriously don’t do it, knock-offs that litter the internet. It can be overwhelming when you have all these options and don’t know where to start, so let’s go through them one by one.

Brother Compatible

Option one: You can always look at Brother compatible (generic) cartridges. These can be a great alternative if you’re a little strapped for cash, provided that you get them from a reputable retailer (like us). Suppose you decide to shop around and roll the dice with compatible cartridges from other sources. In that case, it’s buyer beware. Many comparable cartridges are now refurbished. That in and of itself isn’t a bad thing. However, the degree and quality of the refurbishment are what separates the refurbished from the refuse. The most important part of a toner cartridge to replace when reconditioning is the drum and drum blade. These components are only designed to last the life of the toner powder in the cartridge. If they aren’t replaced, it can lead to light prints, marks, and streaking.

Another issue with poorly made refurbished cartridges is leaking toner. Aside from the mess on your hands and paper, leaking toner is a huge issue for your printer. If the toner leaks onto the drum unit and pinch rollers, it will leave you with some costly repairs. And don’t think your warranty will save you; that won’t be worth the paper it’s written on as soon as you install generic toner cartridges. That being said, if you purchase your comparable cartridges from a reputable company (like us) that replaces the necessary parts, then, and only then, would be recommend using them. They cost less, contain the same (sometimes more) toner than their brand name equivalents, and are better than the environment. But seriously, buy them from a reputable source.

Option two is for the desperate: If you’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel, and we mean sitting on a box of goon for crate day, no office party this Christmas, broke. There’s always the cheap imitation cartridges you can find on many online marketplaces. For the record, we do NOT recommend this option.

And finally, option three: You can go directly to the source and buy yourself a genuine Brother colour toner cartridge. There’s no doubt that cartridges made by the printer manufacturer are going to be the best. Still, that quality usually comes at a price. For that premium, however, you get some very real and lasting benefits:

  • Consistent quality. Other compatible cartridges come close, but you’ll never beat the quality and consistency of using cartridges of the same brand as your printer.
  • The long term benefits. A slightly higher upfront cost can save you money in the long run. Reduced maintenance costs and downtime can save time and money, not to mention using genuine Brother toner cartridges can actually extend the life of your machine.

Other Benefits of Brother Toner Cartridges

  • Brother toner cartridges also meet ISO standards for page yield. That means you’ll get more pages per cartridge and all at premium Brother quality.
  • Keep your warranty valid. If we haven’t already convinced you, this might: Using non-Brother toner cartridges can damage your machine and void your warranty. That’s right – void. That magnificent piece of office engineering could be reduced to nothing more than an oversized paperweight by using the wrong cartridge, and it would be up to you to pay for the repairs.
