Runes are gem-like items in Diablo 2 Resurrected that add extra effects to our items. You can find runes anywhere in the game, trade them, or hoard them to create powerful rune words.

What do runes do in Diablo 2 Resurrected?

Runes are insertable items, just like gems, which means you can drop them into your inserted gear to receive their effects. 

You can also use runes in Horadric Cube recipes. For example, you can combine Ral runes with broken gears to repair. It is a great trick when you’re running low on gold and can’t get it repaired at the vendor.

How to get runes in Diablo 2 Resurrected?

Your best bet is to find areas full of common enemies and kill as many as you can as quickly as possible. Of course, opening chests can also generate runes.

Source of the runes in Diablo 2 Resurrected:

• Random drops from monsters
• Random drops from chests, barrels, and loose rocks.
• Incentives for destroying Mephisto’s Soulstone as part of the Hell’s Forge mission in Act 4
• Obtained during the Rescue on Mount Arreat mission in Act V
• Trading with other players

There is a small chance of dropping runes when we kill monsters. The drop chance of runes in this game depends on many factors. Runes in Diablo 2 Resurrected are not magic items, so we can’t use magic find to increase the chance.

Primary source of runes in Diablo 2 Resurrected

There are four main sources of rune cultivation in Diablo 2 Resurrected. Three of them involve tasks:

Forgotten Tower (Act I): The Countess

This quest will not award runes, but your prey Countess has a high chance to drop runes. She will drop up to 6 runes per kill, but usually, she will only drop 2-3 runes. This quest is repeatable in the new game, and players can kill her repeatedly to get the rune drops.

Rescue on Mount Arreat (Act V)

This quest always rewards up to three runes, Tal (#7), Ral (#8), and Ort (#9). Although not high-level runes, these runes have a great effect on the upgrade of runes.

Runewords in Diablo 2 Resurrected

Combining multiple runes in Diablo 2 Resurrected is Runewords. Players can combine multiple runes and put them into an item with a slot, and then we can get a Runewords.

If you want a more powerful weapon, you’ll need to add runewords to it. You can insert these Runewords into the corresponding weapon, shield or armor. When inserting Runewords, be sure to follow the specified order.

We can only use rune words on certain types of items. Therefore, you need to be extra careful when creating rune words. The player should check that the item type is correct.

When creating rune words, many have variable stats to determine how good or bad the rolls you create are. A perfect rune lexicon is always more valuable than an imperfect one. Likewise, it is always advisable to use the best possible items.

For example, if you’re creating a rune to equip mercenaries, always use the Ethereal base. Mercenary weapons and armor don’t lose durability, so you can get the stat boost from the Ethereal stat without worrying about it breaking.

Rune words added in Diablo 2 Resurrected 2.4 patch

Patch 2.4 was released in Diablo 2 Resurrected not long ago. In this update, the developers not only fixed bugs in the game but also added seven new rune words.

What are the requirements to create a rune word?

To create a rune word, the following conditions must be met：

• We need to insert the runes into the item in the correct order.
• The quality of the items used to create the rune word must be Low, Normal, or Superior.
• The item type used must match the rune.
• The number of sockets of the item must be exactly equal to the number of runes of the desired runeword.
• Rune words enabled for ladder characters can only be created by ladder characters.
