The lake is named for the town, but it is also known as the “Lagoon of Seven Colors” because of its numerous blue and turquoise hues. If you look out over its huge waves, you’ll think you’re relaxing on the Caribbean coast. Then Visiting Lake Bacalar, Mexico is the best available option for you so don’t waste your time making your trip plan.

This was a Mayan region long before the Spanish came in the middle of the 16th century, and it was a frequent target for pirates in the 17th century. Fort Felipe, which was completed in 1733, gave some protection against approaching pillagers. Cancun, the boisterous spring break hotspot, is only a five-hour drive away via Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Bacalar is a Mexican town that may be less accessible than some of Mexico’s more renowned tourist destinations. But there are still plenty of things to do there. Bacalar is a fantastic spot to visit whether you’re traveling alone, with a loved one, or with your family.

What is the best way to get to Bacalar, Mexico?

Because flights to Bacalar aren’t available, you’ll have to fly to a nearby airport with Jetblue Booking Flight and then rent a car, take a shuttle, or take the bus to get there.

Rent a car-   

The most convenient method to go to Bacalar is to rent a car in Mexico and drive it yourself. If you want to stay in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum, you may easily rent a car there or at the Cancun airport when you arrive. The cost of a rental car is usually less than $5 per day.

Take a private shuttle-

The most convenient way to go to Bacalar is to take a private shuttle. Arrange for a private shuttle to pick you up from the airport or your hotel and take you straight to Bacalar. There’s no need to be concerned about riding an overcrowded bus or driving in Mexico. 

Where to stay

Tulum- Xcsape Tulum: This reasonably priced hotel is in a calm area of Tulum while still being close to the city center. The hotel features an outdoor pool, a well-kept garden, and well-appointed rooms.

Bacalar-Kulu Tubohostel Bacalar: Bacalar – The major reason to stay here is the odd concept (you sleep in tubes), but the wonderful breakfast, a small bar, free bikes, and outdoor swimming pool make this place even better.

What to eat

Enjoy as much of the local cuisine as possible, but avoid the tap water, which could make you quite sick. In addition to drinking bottled water, make sure salads aren’t washed in tap water and ice cubes are produced with filtered water.

Things to do in Bacalar 

1. Rent a kayak or paddleboard

Renting a kayak or paddleboard and exploring the lagoon at your own leisure is one of the most popular things to do in Bacalar.

When you move further out from the shore, the stunningly blue lagoon changes its appearance. So don’t hesitate to rent a kayak from one of the hostels (Green Monkey Hostel is a popular backpacker site) or one of the lake-front businesses.

The regular charge for 3 hours of kayaking is Mx 300. Kayaking allows you to spend more time outdoors. Taking in the scenery and watching birds swoop close to the coast. Another option to enjoy Lake Bacalar is to go paddleboarding. You can, of course, do this task on your own. Alternatively, you could go on a Bacalar Sunrise Stand Up Paddle Tour.  

2. Explore San Felipe fort

The fort isn’t particularly enormous, but the blue lake sparkling behind it makes it incredibly attractive. Within the fort, there is a small museum where you may learn more about Bacalar’s pirate past. For foreigners, the entrance price is MX 100, and the facility is closed on Mondays.

The San Felipe Fort was built in the 17th century to safeguard Bacalar from the constant pirate incursions that plagued the area at the time. The fort was finished in 1733, and Spaniards have been able to defend the area more effectively since then. 

3. Visit Pirates canal

To travel to Pirates Canal, there are two options. You can hire a kayak and paddle your own way to the canal (it takes around 20 minutes if you paddle nonstop) and stay as long as you want. You can also join an organized boat tour.

The water in Pirates Canal is shallow, only waist-deep. So it’s more about admiring the beautiful bright blue water and sandy beach than swimming. The canal earned its name from pirate invasions that used this tunnel to access the town in the 17th century.

In the waters of Pirates Canal, there is a unique mud with high mineral content. So massage it all over your body, let it work for a few minutes, and enjoy a free body mask.

4. Visit Cenote Azul

Another nice thing to do in the vicinity is to go to Cenote Azul, which is approximately four kilometers from Bacalar. This cenote was unlike any other we’d seen in Yucatan, such as Coba Cenotes or Cenote Zaci. In that it wasn’t inside a cave and instead seemed like an open lake. The cenote is 90 meters deep and can be swum, snorkeled, or dived in.

Cenote Azul is located in the little community of Xul-Ha, 15 minutes from Bacalar. You can be reached by car, Colectivo, taxi, or bike rental for more adventurous guests. The admission price is Mx 25, but you must walk through a restaurant that has a monopoly on services in this area. 

5. Kohunlich ruins

A major ruins complex, Kohunlich Ruins, is only an hour’s drive from Bacalar. You won’t find many visitors here, despite its size and the fact that it is one of Yucatan’s oldest ruins, especially if you travel alone. For single travel check the air flight on Allegiant Airlines Website for a budget-friendly journey. Most of the time single charges higher in air travel.

This pre-Columbian ruin is an excellent alternative to popular tourist destinations like Chichen Itza and Tulum Ruins. Because most tours depart around lunchtime, arriving in the afternoon is the best way to avoid crowds. If you want to see this complex, you’ll need to take a trip from Bacalar or rent a car because public transportation isn’t available. A private taxi from Bacalar is also a possibility, although it is not inexpensive.
